There’s something truly enchanting about Europe in December.
With its festive spirit, twinkling lights, and cozy atmosphere, it’s a magical time to explore the continent. After living in Europe for 10 years, I’ve had the privilege of spending the holiday season in a variety of countries.
In this blog post, I’ll share my top picks for the best places to visit in Europe in December, each offering a unique and unforgettable winter sojourn.
1. Azores, Portugal
The Azores offer pleasantly warm temperatures that make it a great escape from the season’s cold. While you might encounter some fog or rain, you’ll still have a great time hiking the volcanic islands if you pack accordingly.
Flores and São Miguel are must-visits; you can find helpful tips for navigating these remote destinations here. To make your stay even more memorable, consider indulging in one of the Azores’ dreamy hotels.
2. Berlin, Germany
Having lived in Berlin for over five years, I’ve experienced the city during all seasons, and so I can confirm that December brings its own unique charm and warm atmosphere.
The best part about Berlin in December has got to be the Christmas markets! There are over 60 of them scattered throughout the city, so you’ll definitely run into a few of them without even trying.
Aside from the markets, there are also plenty of other things to do in Berlin during December. Some of my recommendations include ice skating at Potsdamer Platz or sipping Glühwein (hot mulled wine) while admiring the city lights from a rooftop bar.

3. Budapest, Hungary
Not only is Budapest one of the most affordable cities in Europe, it’s also the perfect destination to experience the holiday allure of December. During this month, the entire city metamorphoses, decked out in Christmas lights and decorations.
As the temperatures drop, the streets of Budapest fill with the inviting aromas of warm spices and baked goods. One of the best places to try traditional Hungarian treats is at Vörösmarty Square, where you can sample holiday favorites like goulash, stuffed cabbage, and mulled wine.
While in Budapest, don’t miss out on the City Park ice rink, Europe’s largest natural skating rink, set against the backdrop of the stately Vajdahunyad Castle!
4. The Dolomites, Italy
The Dolomites, in Italy, offer a European ski paradise that rivals the Swiss Alps. Not only are they less crowded, their jaw-dropping scenery and exceptional skiing and snowboarding conditions make them a powder enthusiast’s dream, especially in December.
To maximize your adventure, start in Venice and drive through the mountains to get there. The region boasts dozens of excellent ski resorts with a combined total of approximately 1,200 kilometers of runs. Alta Badia, a top-rated resort, is particularly appealing to skiers and snowboarders of all levels.
5. Dubrovnik, Croatia
One of my all-time-favorite destinations in Europe in December is Croatia! Dubrovnik, in particular, is one of the choicest towns this time of year, because its gorgeous walls are otherwise packed with tourists in the summer.
December is also when the city’s main street, Stradun, is transformed into a festive wonderland filled with Christmas stalls and sparkling decorations. The mild weather makes it the ideal time to enjoy holiday festivities outdoors, like sipping mulled wine while listening to live music or walking the city walls with a cup of hot chocolate in hand.
Croatia is also one of the safest countries for solo travel in Europe, so you can enjoy your time in Dubrovnik with peace of mind.
6. Edinburgh, Scotland
December is an incredibly enchanting time to visit Edinburgh, making it one of the best cities in Europe to experience during this month. It’s adorned with beautiful decorations, and the most popular attraction, The Castle of Light, returns, illuminating the famous fortress in spectacular colors. The streets are filled with holiday markets, carolers, and a contagious festive atmosphere.
One of the highlights of Edinburgh in December is the Christmas Market located in East Princes Street Gardens. Here, you can find traditional Scottish treats like mulled wine and mince pies, as well as pick up unique souvenirs from local vendors.
7. Iceland
Visiting Iceland in the winter definitely comes with its pros and cons, but did you know that there are actually areas that are ideal for December? The Icelandic Highlands, for example, are an incredible sight to see this time of year.
Plus, you can catch a glimpse of the northern lights! I recommend starting a road trip in Reykjavik, and then departing on along either the Ring Road or the Golden Circle. Don’t miss out on the hot springs, as they’re particularly attractive and fun in December.
8. Lake Bled, Slovenia
Slovenia is a lovely destination all year round, but December is extra special, as the entire area is dusted in a blanket of snow. The atmosphere is peaceful, with far fewer tourists than during the summer months.
Stroll through the Lake Bled Christmas Market stalls selling handmade crafts and local treats like potica, a rolled pastry with walnuts; and medenjaci, Slovenia’s version of gingerbread cookies. When the temperatures drop, slip into one of the spas around the lake to warm up in a sauna or hot pool.
9. London, United Kingdom
London in December is like stepping into a real-life Love, Actually scene. The city delightfully transforms, and the twinkling lights, festive decorations, and classic red phone booths perfectly complement the holiday spirit.
There are countless Christmas markets scattered throughout London, each with its own special appeal. And if you want to see the city’s dazzling lights in all their glory, there are even special bus tours designed to showcase the best displays.
10. Prague, Czechia
Prague in December is charming. The crisp air and frosty mornings create a breathtaking backdrop for a stroll across Charles Bridge or a walk to the Prague Castle.
Indulge in Prague’s incredible food scene, with Czech dishes like nourishing stews and hearty meats. And of course, no visit would be complete without sampling its world-famous beer, whether on a craft beer tour or in a cozy pub.
11. Rovaniemi, Finland
Rovaniemi, Finland, is an essential destination in December. Located in Finnish Lapland, this winter paradise is blanketed in snow and ice, making it the most superb setting for a festive holiday vacation.
The iconic Santa Claus Village is a highlight of any trip to Rovaniemi. This popular tourist destination is known as the official hometown of Santa Claus and allows visitors a glimpse into his magical world.
For a unique stay, consider booking a room at the mystical SnowHotel, which is carved from snow and ice each year. The glass igloos with transparent domes provide breathtaking views of the northern lights, making it a heavenly place to fall asleep under a starry sky. Don’t forget to book your room well in advance!
12. Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria
Saalbach-Hinterglemm in the Austrian Alps is a skier’s paradise in December. If you’re looking for an amazing getaway, you’ve got to check out this resort! It has such a cool mountain-retreat vibe, and the variety of slopes is fantastic — whether you’re just starting out or ready to tackle the pro runs.
Seriously, the backdrop of the Alps is absolutely breathtaking; you won’t find many places more beautiful to ski, snowshoe-hike, and explore.
To top it off, the town is covered in festive decorations during the month of December, creating an enchanting atmosphere. For a convenient accommodation, consider staying at Boutique Hotel Anybody, which is just a short walk from the ski lifts.
13. Stuttgart, Germany
If you’re someone who loves everything about Christmas, Stuttgart is one of the best places to be in December for Germany’s world-famous Christmas markets.
The city and its surrounding areas are filled with markets that are packed with holiday cheer all month long, each with its own original theme (there’s even one completely dedicated to chocolate!). While other places try to replicate these markets, there’s really nothing like enjoying them in Germany.
With warm, spicy aromas, delicious food, twinkling lights, and crisp air, Stuttgart is the best spot to soak up the appeal of Weihnachten this December.
14. Vienna, Austria
December is when Vienna — and the rest of Austria — start to sparkle with the first hints of the festive season that lasts all month long.
The streets begin to glow with twinkling golden lights, and the scent of roasting chestnuts and smoky Viennese sausages fills the air, transporting visitors into a winter wonderland. As you stroll through the early holiday markets, you’ll experience the cozy warmth Vienna is known for, even as the temperatures begin to drop.
Want to escape the cold for a few hours? Consider popping into one of the city’s famous art museums, like the Kunsthistorisches Museum or the Albertina.
Whether you’re looking to explore historic cities without the crowds, embrace the festive spirit early, or soak in the beauty of fall landscapes, I hope this list inspires your December travels through Europe. It’s a fantastic time to discover the continent at a more relaxed pace, with cooler temperatures, fewer tourists, and plenty of cultural and seasonal events to enjoy.
