Every so often, a place knocks the breath right out of you and leaves you reeling. The Grand Hotel Kronenhof in Pontresina is one of those places—a marvel of 19th-century design that makes you feel like royalty from the moment you step inside.
Imagine a castle in the Alps, with glacier views, towering larch trees flaming in autumn colors, and original 1800s artwork on every wall and ceiling. Yes, that’s the Kronenhof, a true design masterpiece that somehow combines Old-World grandeur with all the thoughtful comforts you crave on vacation.
We stayed for 3 nights in October 2024, and these are my honest thoughts on whether or not it’s worth it (by the way, we paid for the stay, but at a reduced rate):
Aesthetic Brilliance: Art and Architecture Fit for Royalty
Every corner, hallway, and room feels like a scene from a historical novel, and I mean that in the best way possible. The original 19th-century paintings? Still here, timeless and glorious, draped across the ceilings and walls with such precision that you’re half-expecting someone in a powdered wig to welcome you to tea.
Staying here is like inhabiting a work of art—each room and corridor an invitation to marvel at intricate details, gilded chandeliers, and arches that make you want to twirl around like a character from a period drama. It’s not just luxury; it’s a full-blown experience, one where you get to walk through history and feel like you belong in it.
Service Fit for a King (and Queen and the Whole Royal Family)
The service here is next-level, and it all starts before you even realize you need help. Pull up to the entrance, and they handle everything. Forget lugging your bags—nope, they’ll take care of unloading, valet your car, whisk your luggage to your room, and basically ensure you don’t have to lift a finger.
The staff seems to read your mind, anticipating every little need before it even crosses your lips. And if you’re bringing the whole family? They’ve thought of it all. Suites with closing doors and pull-out couches give kids their own space, and if you’re lucky enough to land the grand suite (hello, Room 504), the views alone will keep you spellbound. For families needing extra room, you can even connect to the neighboring suite. Honestly, every possible detail is meticulously taken care of here.
How to Book
Did you know that there is a right way and a wrong way to book hotels? It took me a decade of traveling to learn that booking.com is the WRONG way, and the best way is through a travel agent, like me, with a personal relationship with the hotel who can help get you extra perks for free. The following are exclusive perks especially for my clients at no extra cost above the best available room rate:
- Room upgrade upon availability
- Early Check-In/ Late Check-Out upon availability.
- Local sweets in the room upon arrival
- Special Kids Amenity for families. Contact me for the best booking rates and perks.
Peek Inside the Rooms
The hotel has around 100 rooms and in addition to your typical king room, there are several kinds of suites with different styles and vibes. The newly-renovated junior suites have views of the Engadine Valley, which is stunning at any time of year.
These images are of the largest suite on the property, which has a sitting room, huge closet, two bathrooms, separate bedroom, and the ability to connect to another double room for families. It also has a gorgeous verandah, pictured above.
We opted to stay in the Laret Suite, which has a view of the town of Pontresina and a completely separate living space with closing doors, which helps us all sleep better on vacation with a toddler!
These suites retain more of the old style of the hotel, with decorated wooden ceilings and fully wooden wardrobes and closing doors. It was so charming, it felt like we had stepped back in time.
Both styles of suite are available depending on your unique tastes.
Activities for All: Yoga, Saunas, and a Kids Club Straight Out of a Fairy Tale
There’s something for everyone at the Kronenhof, no matter the season. In the summer, you’ll have endless hiking trails to explore, while winter brings all the magic of a Swiss winter wonderland without the crowded bustle of St. Moritz (but close enough to enjoy it if you want a taste) and not too far from Davos as well. And fall? Oh, fall here is a dream—quiet, colorful, with those larches blazing against the snowy peaks.
As for the amenities, let’s just say you’ll never be bored. Yoga, Pilates, and meditation classes are offered daily to help you unwind. Want to swim? Head to their year-round indoor pool with beautiful views, and if you’re traveling with little ones, they even have a separate area with a water slide.
Need a break? Their kids’ club is huge, with a dedicated dining room, activities, and included childcare for kids aged 4 and up. And if your little ones are under 4, they’ve got you covered with available nanny services, so you can steal a moment in the sauna or relax over dinner.
Dining and Entertainment: Because Live Piano and Bowling Are Always a Good Idea
Dining at the Kronenhof is as magical as the rest of the stay. Picture a grand dining room, your meal accompanied by live piano music that sets the perfect ambiance.
Breakfast is an impressive spread with fresh honeycomb, fruit, a selection of local cheeses (which, if you’re a cheese lover, you’ll be lucky enough to get some Swiss and Italian cheeses), pastries, cooked-to-order hot meals, and juices among other things.
The dinner is a set menu with several choices each evening beginning at 7pm. Sometimes, we opted to do room service in our room for an earlier dinner with our little one, which is available all day.
The whole experience feels delightfully old-school in the best way, as if you’re stepping back into a more elegant time. And for a bit of unexpected fun, they’ve got a bowling alley, free for guests to use. Because, of course, this fairytale hotel has a bowling alley!
Whether you’re on a romantic getaway or a family adventure, the Kronenhof caters to everyone with a mix of charm and sophistication that’s impossible not to fall in love with.
The Bottom Line: A Swiss Alps Stay That’s As Close to Perfect As It Gets
If you’re looking for the kind of place that will completely spoil you and then some, Grand Hotel Kronenhof is it. Between the jaw-dropping architecture, seamless service, and thoughtful details, it’s easy to see why this place earns a resounding A+. It’s a splurge, yes, but worth every penny, offering an experience that will have you dreaming about your stay long after you’ve left.
From the grandiosity of the building itself to the modern conveniences that make every moment comfortable, the Kronenhof sets a standard that’s hard to beat. It’s a place where history meets luxury, and you’re invited to be a part of it.
