The ingredients that go into making a place one of the most romantic hotels in California might vary. However, they must include a healthy dash of coziness, a fantastic view, and enough on-site amenities that you don’t have to leave the property if you don’t want to. I’ve stayed in my fair share of boutique hotels throughout California, and there are a few that stick out in my mind as romantic havens. These are a few of mine and other travel bloggers’ favorites:
1. Sacred Rock Inn
Though I stayed here with a toddler, it was no less romantic than it would have been without him. I mean, look at that tub! Not only can you have the bubble bath of your dreams at Sacred Rock Inn, but there’s also a jacuzzi with an ocean view so you’ll never miss out on a chance to take in the beauty of the Pacific.
This luxurious hotel earns its name as a sacred place full of magic and beauty–from its twisting staircases to its serene yoga space and numerous balconies so close to the water that you can feel the salty spray of the ocean. To top it all off, the hotel’s Greenwood Restaurant offers an unforgettable meal perfect for a special celebration as a couple. Whether you’re coming for an anniversary or a romantic weekend away from home, Sacred Inn wins in the category of overall lovey-dovey atmosphere. You won’t want to leave!

Overlooking the Pacific in Fort Bragg, The Inn at Newport Ranch sits on a cool 2000 acres, complete with a Fireside Spa, over 20 miles of hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, and a farm-to-table restaurant.

5. Mt. Ada Bed & Breakfast
Catalina Island is known as the Island of Romance, and nothing is more romantic than a stay at the Mt. Ada Bed & Breakfast.
Built in 1921 as the home of William Wrigley, Jr. and his wife Ada, the hotel offers sweeping views of Avalon Bay and the Pacific Ocean from its mountainside perch 350 feel above the town. Mt. Ada Bed & Breakfast has only six guest rooms, each luxuriously appointed and beautifully decorated (some with fireplaces!), making for a truly intimate and romantic getaway.
But a stay at this former private mansion does not just include a room. Guests also have full access to an expansive living room and wrap around terrace, as well as a fully-stocked butler’s pantry. Breakfast, lunch, and evening wine and cheese are provided every day, as well as use of a golf cart to buzz into town and enjoy all of Catalina Island’s many restaurants and activities. We found this amenity at Mt. Ada Bed & Breakfast to be the best of both worlds; it was wonderful having the freedom to get around on our own from a property that is otherwise very isolated.

9. The Madonna Inn
The Madonna Inn is a popular and overly romantic resort in San Louis Obispo, California. It was first opened in 1958 by Alex Madonna and his wife, and is still a family owned business.
The resort is known for its kitschy, over-the-top decor. Their main exterior colour is pink, which can be found everywhere from the restaurant dining room to their tennis court. Many people passing by stop there for a restroom break simply because they want to see this famous establishment.
All 110 rooms at the Madonna Inn are unique and they all have a theme. Each of them also have a name, such as “Bridal Falls”, “Love Nest” or “Sugar and Spice”. The rooms are quite romantic and many of them have a rock waterfall shower. We also loved the little soap cake in the bathroom which was shaped like their own bakery’s signature cake.
All the amenities at Madonna Inn kept us busy, such as the spa, pool, bakery and their shops. They also offer horseback riding and pink bicycles for their guests to use during their stay. The Madonna Inn is truly one of a kind! – Paula of Gone With the Gastons
Though I’m a firm believer that lifelong memories can be made in the mundane, everyday moments, spending time together becomes even more special in places like these.
